We Cultivate Health Rather than Manage Disease

The Science of Cellular Health

The Problem: Cellular Senescence

Cellular senescence is a fundamental process in aging and disease. It is a biological process in which cells lose their ability to divide and function optimally, entering a state of growth arrest, and it is the primary driver of aging and age-related chronic disease.

Cellular senescence has been shown to be the root cause of many chronic diseases: Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, cardiovascular disease, heart failure, cardiac and pulmonary fibrosis, insulin resistance and type II diabetes, fatty liver disease, chronic kidney disease, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, COPD, skin aging, age-related sarcopenia (muscle loss) and frailty, and others.

Cellular senescence occurs due to various stressors such as telomere shortening, DNA strand damage, oncogene activation, and, more importantly, epigenetic changes that alter gene expression.  Once these stressors reach a critical level, the cell becomes senescent, no longer dividing or functioning normally, but not dying or self-destructing either. It becomes a “zombie” cell, and it undergoes several distinct changes: it stops dividing and functioning normally, and it undergoes structural changes, becoming larger and flattening out, and accumulating a “wear and tear” pigment called lipofuscin. But worse, it begins to secrete a variety of abnormal chemical signaling molecules known as the SASP (senescence-associated secretory phenotype). These chemical signals then cause neighboring healthy cells to become senescent as well, spreading the dysfunction further. The increasing levels of these chemical signals causes a growing inflammatory response which causes organ damage, leading, ultimately, to disease.

The Solution: Senolytic Therapy

Our method at Natural Neurosciences focuses on jump-starting the cell’s own machinery to slow or reverse the spiral into senescence. This involves manipulating cellular processes that have been affected by senescence, restarting some and suppressing others.

We use a variety of senolytic and senomorphic therapies (herbals, peptides, and occasionally pharmaceuticals), diet, exercise, lifestyle changes, neurocognitive therapies, brain stimulation modalities, and more, to mitigate the effects of senescence. By doing so, we address the root cause of many, many diseases, not “managing” the disease, but building health instead.

If you choose to have us develop you a custom care plan for better health, your initial consultation will begin with a comprehensive medical and personal history. This will include not only your past medical and surgical history, but also detailed family, psychosocial, educational and occupational histories. We also include dietary and lifestyle analysis, and assess your exposure to environmental toxins. This is followed by a comprehensive physical and neurological exam. If necessary, laboratory and/or imaging studies may be ordered. This initial consultation may take as much as two hours, so plan accordingly. On follow-up, you will be given a personalized plan of care that will include options to be reviewed and discussed.

This treatment plan is customized to you, to meet your needs. You are not an organ system or a disease. You are a unique and complete individual to us. No two people are alike; therefore, no two treatment plans will be either.

Who We Are

Dr. Todd Rutland is originally from Alabama. He completed his undergraduate education in literature, philosophy and psychology at Auburn University (War Eagle!). He completed his master’s degree in literature and linguistics at the University of Kentucky (Go Cats!) while also finishing the pre-med curriculum. He attended the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, receiving his MD in 2001. He completed his residency in Neurology at UK in 2005. He has been in private practice in Tennessee      since 2005.

His interests are wide ranging, and his focus in medicine has evolved over the years to include herbalism, holistic medicine, eastern philosophy and medicine, as well as alternative and complimentary medical treatments. He and his wife, Michelle, live on their organic farm where they raise their own vegetables and livestock, as well as many herbs that are used in their supplements.

Our Mission

Our goal is NOT the management of chronic disease. Our goal is the cultivation of health. Fortunately, our methods improve physiologic function at the cellular level, addressing the root cause of many chronic disorders. A long lifespan is of limited value unless those years are years of health and vitality. We strive to make your healthspan equal your lifespan. Your cells already possess the machinery required for proper, healthy functioning. We focus on restarting that machinery so that you have the longest healthspan possible, reducing your reliance on expensive and risky pharmaceuticals, using safe and natural therapies instead.

Services We Offer

Custom Care Plans to Enhance Brain, Body and Spirit

Using biohacking methodologies and a variety of senolytic and senomorphic therapies, diet, exercise, lifestyle changes, neurocognitive therapies, brain stimulation modalities, and more, we create a custom care plan just for you.  This care plan will help mitigate the effects of cellular senescence which has been shown to be the root cause of many chronic diseases.

. We do not “manage” diseases, but build health instead. We strive to make your healthspan equal your lifespan.  It is never too late to build a healthier you.

Personalized Stroke, TBI, and Concussion Rehabilitation

Even relatively “mild” head injuries and “small” strokes can have lasting detrimental effects on cognitive function. Early efforts at rehabilitation yield the best results; however, access to cognitive rehabilitation services is limited, found mostly in large inpatient rehabilitation units in major metropolitan areas. Furthermore, most mild to moderate head injuries and many mild strokes are evaluated in the ER, and the patient subsequently discharged home for outpatient follow up and possible PT/OT. Many patients with cognitive deficits, therefore, go untreated.

We offer individualized cognitive rehabilitation services for individuals with concussion, TBI, and stroke. A formal evaluation of cognitive and neurobehavioral function allows us to formulate a detailed rehabilitation plan tailored to the individual patient’s needs. The plan is customized to the patient, and may address deficits in attention, memory, executive function, language, visuospatial skills, and social cognition as required.

Accupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine-based approach to treating a variety of conditions by triggering specific points on the skin with tiny, hair-thin, needles.

Acupuncture is effective in managing numerous conditions.

Acupuncture can help relieve pain, reduce stress, and improve overall wellness by balancing the body's energy flow. It is often used to treat conditions like chronic pain, headaches, neuropathy and anxiety, and may also support digestive health and boost the immune system. Other conditions that can benefit from acupuncture are:

  • acute pain (including that resulting from an injury)
  • allergies
  • anxiety and depression
  • auto-immune diseases
  • osteoarthritis
  • chronic pain, (often in the neck, back, knees, and head)
  • diabetes
  • gastrointestinal disorders
  • hypertension
  • IBS and GERD
  • insomnia
  • migraines and tension headaches
  • multiple sclerosis
  • neuropathy
  • sprains
  • stroke recovery

Herbal Supplements

The number and variety of herbal supplements on the market can be overwhelming and confusing.  And contrary to marketing slogans, when it comes to herbal supplements, more is not always better.

Tradtional forms of medicine (Chinese, Ayurveda) have long recognized that small amounts of multiple herbs working together is superior to massive doses of any single herbal remedy or pharmaceutical agent.  More is not always better.

We can offer a customized blend, personalized to you, and based on a scientific understanding of the biological effects of the phytochemicals inolved. This means you are not overpaying for unnecessary and expensive supplements.

Brain Stimulation Modalities

Direct stimulation of specific portions of the brain can provide dramatic improvement in a number of neurological disorders.

The brain is an electromagnetic organ and multiple stimulation techniques can help to fine tune the electromagnetic function of the nervous system.

These technics include:

*  Transcutaneous Vagal Nerve Stimulation (tNVS)

* Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)

* Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)

*  Non-invasive cerebellar stimulation

These modalities are used to treat:

• depression

• anxiety

• ADHD

• dementia

• insomnia

• Parkinson's Disease

• stroke rehabilitation

*  TBI and concussion rehabilitation

• chronic pain

...and many others

REST Therapy (Sensory Deprivation Float Pod)

REST Therapy, also knows as floatation therapy or sensory deprivation therapy, creates a unique environment that allows for many mental and physical benefits.

Almost every single person in our information-technology- driven society is constantly bombarded with electronic sensory input. Our float pod can help you disconnect for a while.  REST Therapy (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) enables you to minimize your sensory stimuli, and let your brain guide itself for a bit.

You float in approximately ten inches of warm, saltwater solution, which allows the body to float effortlessly while minimizing external stimuli.

Studies indicate float pod sessions can offer several benefits, including:

  • pain relief (muscle, joint, and other chronic pain)
  • inflammation reduction
  • relaxation and anxiety/stress reduction
  • improved sleep
  • reduced symptoms of depression
  • enhanced mental clarity and creativity
  • athletic recovery
  • reduced high blood pressure
  • increase feelings of well-being and happiness

Tai Chi Instruction

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art, only without the fighting and subtitles.  It has been called "Moving Meditation", a name that captures its varied benefits.

Focusing on slow and graceful movements, Tai Chi builds balance, not only physical, but also mental and spiritual.  It can help maintain joint flexibility, coordination, and our ability to walk independently as we age.

Ask about personalized instruction in the basics of this ancient martial art.

Dietary Analysis & Consultation

Gut health and diet are extremely important to health,

and yet it is one of the least talked about subjects that are vital to your health.

We perform an in-depth dietary and nutritional analysis with specific recommendations, even recipes.

Guided Meditation

Mindfulness meditation has a scientifically well-established reputation for mental, physical, and spiritual benefits, so much so that mindfulness meditation programs now exist in many academic and private medical centers worldwide.

Although based on learning to consciously control large scale brain networks, mindfulness mediation is a simple skill accessible to anyone willing to learn.

Anyone can learn to mediate, and studies have shown benefits in patients with chronic pain, depression and anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Meditation can even improve surgical outcomes.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine-based approach to treating a variety of conditions by triggering specific points on the skin with tiny needles.

Acupuncture can help relieve pain, reduce stress, and improve overall wellness by balancing the body's energy flow. It is often used to treat conditions like chronic pain, headaches, and anxiety, and may also support digestive health and boost the immune and neurological systems.

How it Works: Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the central nervous system, releasing chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.

A floatation tank, sometimes referred to as an isolation tank or sensory deprivation tank, is a zero-gravity environment designed to help your mind, body and spirit to relax, recover and reset. When you begin your floatation therapy session, you’ll enter a safe, clean and serene environment minimizing external stimuli.

With 90% of gravity off your body and very little sensory input, your central nervous system gets a break. During the float, your body decreases the release of hormones and neurotransmitters that have a stressful effect on your body and increases the beneficial chemicals such as feel-good endorphins. Your body is completely supported, bobbing on the surface of the water and the result is profound relaxation and healing.
